You turn the page, and there they are: three essay topics. Your heart beats faster. One looks familiar, one looks strange, and one you are not sure about. You have about three minutes to choose, and 15 marks depend on that choice.
Many students search for LAT essay topics and memorize ready-made essays. But a memorized essay rarely fits the exact question on the paper. What actually wins marks is knowing how to choose a topic quickly and write a clear, relevant answer within 200 words. This guide gives you both: 30 practice topics, three exam-length samples in English, one in Urdu, HEC’s real marking criteria and a practice tool that gives you a fresh three-topic paper every time.
Table of Contents
LAT Essay Topics and Marks at a Glance
| Point | What you need to know |
|---|---|
| Marks | 15 out of 100 |
| Choice | 1 topic out of 3 |
| Word limit | 200 words maximum |
| Language | English or Urdu |
| Time | 40 minutes for the essay and personal statement together |
| Marking | HEC’s five published criteria |
How HEC Marks Your 15-Mark Essay

HEC’s content weightages for the LAT give the essay 15 marks, with one topic to be chosen out of three, in English or Urdu. The essay and personal statement share 40 minutes. The HEC/ETC advertisement for LAT 2026, published on 4 October 2026, sets a limit of 200 words maximum for the essay. Always follow the instructions printed on your own paper and check the latest notice on the HEC ETC portal.
Whatever LAT essay topics you get, the same five criteria for marking the essay, published by HEC, decide your marks. Here is what each one is roughly worth out of 15:
| HEC criterion | Weight | About this many marks | What it means in 200 words |
|---|---|---|---|
| Opening / introduction | 15% | 2.25 | Answer the topic directly in the first lines |
| Coherence and logical development | 20% | 3 | Each paragraph leads naturally to the next |
| Relevance and creativity of ideas | 30% | 4.5 | Strong, on-topic points with a real example |
| Conclusion | 15% | 2.25 | A clear ending, not a sudden stop |
| Vocabulary, grammar and spelling | 20% | 3 | Simple, correct and clean language |
| Total | 100% | 15 |
HEC gives the percentages; the marks column is our simple conversion. Two lessons stand out. Ideas carry the most weight, so relevance matters more than long words. And a proper conclusion is worth as much as the introduction, so never let your essay just stop.
What HEC’s Child Labour Sample Teaches You
Of all LAT essay topics, “Child Labour” is the one HEC chose for its official sample essay for the LAT, marked as a 15-mark question. It opens with a quotation, describes where children work in Pakistan, explains the causes such as poverty and the cost of education, describes how children are mistreated, notes that the law exists but is not enforced, and ends with a short list of solutions.
What to learn from it:
- A clear order: problem, causes, effects, then solutions.
- Local examples: filling stations, bakeries, hotels and fields make the essay feel real.
- A practical ending: it suggests what can actually be done.
What not to copy:
- Its length. The sample runs to about 489 words, more than double the 200-word limit in the latest advertisement.
- Its ending. It finishes with a list of solutions but no separate concluding paragraph, and the conclusion carries 15% of the marks.
So treat it as a teaching sample, not an exam-ready answer. Sample 3 below shows the same topic in under 200 words, with a proper conclusion.
How to Choose 1 of 3 LAT Essay Topics in 3 Minutes

Do not pick the topic that looks easiest; pick the one you can answer best. Ask three quick questions about each:
- Do I understand exactly what it asks?
- Can I think of two strong points and one real example?
- Do I know the words I need to write about it?
The topic with three “yes” answers is your topic. If two topics pass, choose the one with the better example.
Also read the task, not just the theme. “Social media is harming students” and “How social media can improve education” share a theme, but they ask for different essays. Writing the wrong one costs you marks for relevance.
| If the topic says… | It is asking you to… |
|---|---|
| “Importance of…” or “Role of…” | Explain why something matters, with examples |
| “Advantages and disadvantages…” | Give both sides, then your balanced view |
| “Causes and solutions…” | Explain why it happens and how to fix it |
| “Do you agree…?” or “Is … a blessing or a curse?” | Take a clear side and defend it |
The 200-Word Structure That Fits Any Topic

In 200 words, you have no space to wander. Four short paragraphs work for almost all LAT essay topics:
| Paragraph | What to write | Words |
|---|---|---|
| 1. Introduction | Define the topic and give your main answer | 30–40 |
| 2. First point | One idea, one reason, one example | 50–60 |
| 3. Second point | A different idea, or the other side | 50–60 |
| 4. Conclusion | Sum up and end with a forward-looking line | 25–35 |
| Total | 155–195 |
Keep one idea in each paragraph and use a Pakistani example wherever you can. In an essay this short, plain paragraphs read better than headings or long lists.
LAT Essay Samples in English
These three samples cover some of the most useful LAT essay topics. They are original, written for practice and each under 200 words. They follow the structure above. Learn the method, not the exact words. If you want to sharpen your grammar too, practise our LAT English MCQs.
Sample 1: Uses of Artificial Intelligence
Artificial intelligence (AI) is the ability of computers to learn from data and perform tasks that once needed human thinking. Used wisely, it can make life in Pakistan faster, safer and fairer.
AI is already changing everyday services. In hospitals, it can help doctors read X-rays and spot diseases early. In farming, mobile apps can warn farmers about weather and crop disease. In education, AI tutors can explain a lesson again and again until a student understands.
AI can also support justice. Lawyers can search thousands of old judgments in seconds, and courts can use it to manage case files, which may help reduce delays. However, AI must assist judges, not replace them, because justice needs human judgment.
AI also brings risks. It can spread fake videos, misuse personal data and replace some jobs. Therefore, we need clear laws, training for workers and responsible use.
In short, AI is a powerful tool. If Pakistan uses it with care and good laws, it can serve people instead of controlling them.
(169 words)
How it earns marks: the first paragraph defines the topic and gives a clear answer (introduction). Each body paragraph has one idea with examples (ideas and logical development). The risks paragraph adds balance, and the last line gives a clear conclusion.
Sample 2: Importance of Justice in Society
Justice means giving every person their due, without fear or favour. It is the foundation on which a peaceful society stands.
First, justice creates trust. When people believe that courts and institutions will treat them equally, they settle disputes through the law instead of violence. Where justice is delayed or denied, people take the law into their own hands, and disorder spreads.
Second, justice protects the weak. A poor labourer, a widow or a minority citizen often has no power except the law. The Constitution of Pakistan promises that all citizens are equal before the law, and real justice turns that promise into reality.
Justice also supports progress, because businesses invest and jobs grow only where contracts and rights are respected. Above all, it is a moral duty: the Holy Qur’an commands believers to stand firmly for justice, even against themselves.
In conclusion, justice is not a luxury but a necessity. A nation can survive many hardships, but it cannot survive long without justice.
(164 words)
How it earns marks: it takes a clear position in the first lines. “First” and “Second” make the logic easy to follow, and the Constitution and the Qur’an give strong, relevant support. The final line is short and memorable.
Sample 3: Child Labour in Under 200 Words (HEC’s Topic)
Child labour means making children work when they should be learning and playing. In Pakistan, children can still be seen working in workshops, brick kilns, hotels and homes. It steals their childhood and weakens the nation’s future.
The main cause is poverty. Many poor families depend on a child’s small income to survive. Distant or costly schools, large families and a lack of awareness make the problem worse. Some employers also prefer children because they are cheap and cannot complain.
The effects are serious. Working children miss school, suffer injuries and often face abuse. Without education, they remain trapped in low-paid work, and poverty passes to the next generation.
Pakistan’s Constitution forbids employing children under 14 in factories, mines and hazardous work, but the law must be enforced strictly. Free schooling, support for poor families and public awareness can give parents a real choice.
In conclusion, child labour is not only a family problem but a national one. Every child who returns to school is a step towards a stronger Pakistan.
(171 words)
How it earns marks: it covers the same ground as HEC’s sample (problem, causes, effects, law and solutions) in less than half the words, and it ends with a proper conclusion.
LAT Essay Sample in Urdu (اردو)
HEC allows the essay in Urdu, so any of the LAT essay topics can be answered in Urdu. If you write faster and more clearly in Urdu, use it, but do not mix English and Urdu inside one essay. Below is the same AI essay, written naturally in Urdu, not translated word for word.

From Weak to Strong: Fixing an Introduction

The introduction is worth about 2.25 marks, and it shapes how the rest of your essay is read. Here is a weak opening many students write for the AI topic:
“Artificial intelligence is a very important topic in today’s modern world. It has many advantages and disadvantages. In this essay, I will discuss artificial intelligence in detail.”
| Weak part | The problem | Better approach |
|---|---|---|
| “A very important topic in today’s modern world” | Empty words that fit any topic | Define the topic in one clear line |
| “It has many advantages and disadvantages” | Says nothing specific | Give your actual view |
| “In this essay, I will discuss…” | Wastes words on announcing | Start discussing straight away |
Now compare it with the opening of Sample 1: one line defines AI, the next gives a clear view. Same topic, same length, far more marks.

What If You Know None of the Three Topics?
Even well-prepared students meet unfamiliar LAT essay topics. Do not panic, and do not pick at random. Almost any topic can be opened through five angles:
- People: how does it affect individuals and families?
- Society: how does it affect communities and values?
- Economy: how does it affect jobs, money and growth?
- Law and government: what rules exist, and what should be done?
- Future: how will it shape the next generation?
Pick the two angles that fit the topic best. They become your two body paragraphs. Then use the topic’s own words in your introduction and conclusion, so the examiner can see that you stayed relevant.
8 Mistakes That Cost Essay Marks
Avoid these mistakes with any of the LAT essay topics:
- Forcing a memorized essay onto a different question.
- Crossing 200 words. Practise until you can feel the limit.
- No clear answer in the introduction.
- Repeating one point in different words instead of adding a new one.
- No examples. A single Pakistani example can lift a paragraph.
- No conclusion. It carries 15% of the marks.
- Invented statistics or quotations. If you are not sure, leave them out.
- Careless spelling and grammar, which carry 20% of the marks.

Frequently Asked Questions
What are the most important LAT essay topics?
There is no official list of essay topics for LAT test candidates. Preparation material most often covers education, justice and rule of law, technology and AI, youth, social media, women’s rights, corruption, inflation and the environment. Prepare these themes, but focus on the skill of answering any topic clearly, because the exact question can always surprise you.
How many marks and words is the LAT essay?
The essay carries 15 of the LAT’s 100 marks, and you choose one topic out of three. The HEC/ETC advertisement for LAT 2026 sets a maximum of 200 words. Aim for about 160 to 190 words, and always follow the instructions printed on your paper.
Can I write the LAT essay in Urdu?
Yes. HEC allows the essay in English or Urdu. Choose the language you write most clearly in, and stay in it for the whole essay. To count Urdu words, count the groups of letters separated by spaces, and stay a little below 200 to be safe.
Does HEC publish past LAT essay topics?
No. HEC publishes the content weightages, the essay marking criteria, a sample essay on child labour and answer keys for the MCQs. Lists of past LAT essay topics online are mostly recalled by candidates, so treat them as practice ideas, not confirmed questions.
Should I memorize complete essays?
Memorize structures and ideas, not full essays. Learn the four-paragraph structure, a few strong examples and some good vocabulary for each major theme. Then you can build a fresh, relevant essay on whatever topic appears. This way, your essay always matches the question printed on your paper.
How many paragraphs should a 200-word essay have?
Four short paragraphs work well: an introduction, two body paragraphs with one idea each, and a conclusion. This is a practical guide, not an HEC rule. A topic with three clear causes or solutions may need a fifth short paragraph, as long as you stay within 200 words.
Can I use headings or bullet points in the LAT essay?
HEC has not published a rule on this. In only 200 words, plain paragraphs usually show your logic more clearly. HEC’s own sample uses a short lettered list for its solutions, so a brief list is not wrong, but it cannot replace your conclusion.
How much time should I spend on the essay?
HEC gives 40 minutes for the essay and personal statement together. A practical plan is about 3 minutes to choose a topic, 21 minutes to plan and write the essay, 12 minutes for the personal statement and 4 minutes to check both. The essay carries more marks, so give it the bigger share.
Conclusion: Choose Fast, Write Clear, Finish Strong
Three topics, three minutes and 15 marks. You cannot control which LAT essay topics appear on your paper, but you can control how ready you are. Learn HEC’s five criteria, practise the four-paragraph structure, and build ideas around the major themes.
Practise with the tool until writing 200 clear words feels natural. On test day, read all three topics, choose the one you can answer best, and finish strong.
The paper will give you three topics. Your preparation decides how many of the 15 marks you take home.
